The revelations today are part of a wide-ranging operation by the CBI into the alleged misuse of funds by AAP in the Goa assembly polls. The agency has claimed that the party was in breach of customs, standards and possibly the law concerning these elections, as far as its financial conduct is concerned while alleging that some of the money may have been embezzled. The allegations indicate that AAP under Kejriwal may have levelled up funds which were either unaccounted or undeclared and utilized them for funding the Candidates thus aspiring doubts regarding transparency.

Regarding these allegations, AAP has strongly dismissed any impropriety saying that the central BJP government is working to persecute opposition leaders and parties using agencies such as the CBI. AAP leaders have defended themselves claiming that these allegations are politically motivated to bring bad light upon AAP prior to elections and which diverts the attention from actual governance. They have criticized the allegations as having lack of solid proof and added that the opposition is victimized by BJP’s tactics.

AAP spokesmen have declared that the party has acted transparent as well as accountable towards all their expenditures made in relation to the elections and it was stated that all legal provisions were adhered to during the process and full accountability was maintained. It has also doubt the intention of these allegations stating that all these charges is being made now, when AAP is slowly emerging a force to reckon with in states other than Delhi to stir public consciousness.

There are basically political repercussions of these allegations, as AAP leaders have gone on to hold press conferences and public meetings against the back drop of the controversy and rallying supporters against what they characterise as a politically motivated campaign. The party has also been making counter complaints of political victimization by the BJP especially using the state structures to deal with dissent and opposition.

This comes at a time when the political environment in India is charged with political confrontation where the opposition parties accuses the BJP government of using the investigative agencies to target them. The eventual judgement of this case can potentially set up larger implications with respect to electoral politics in India mainly in reference to the state power and resource. The status remains somewhat open and both companies do not cease the escalation of the conflict and the preparation for the legal conflict in court.

Recently the CBI declared in a court that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had assured every AAP candidate for the 2022 Goa assembly elections of ninety lakh rupees in funding. CBI claimed that this assurance was given for poll related activities and to strengthen the party’s prospects in the polls. The CBI submission came when it was probing the complaint of alleged financial misconduct and embezzlement of the funds in the course of electoral activities relating to AAP.
