The CBI said that the former principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata was on an endeavor to attempt to mislead the investigators in the rape case in which he was implicated. The case relate to an event that has caused a stir in that city and brought a lot of criticism from the public.
The former principal was alleged of subornation to perjury and obstruction of the investigation process. From the CBI information as reported by Guardian, he even manufacture stories that first led the inquiries astray but incongruities in his stories gave the investigators suspicion. Interrogation and cross examination of records showed that he had reclined major facts and had gone further to forge and alter documents belonging to the case.
The rape incident itself was with a student of RG Kar Medical College and the principal had gone all out to shield the main actors in the case. The fact that his institution depends on him and supported his position as a commander allowed him to control some of aspects of the initial investigation. However, the CBI’s deeper investigation – based on analysis of the call records and the testimonies of the witness — revealing him to be an accused in the act of blocking the justice.
Official charges have been pressed against him under sections that touching criminal conspiracy, tampering with evidence and making false statements. The investigation also pointed at a number of other people involved in the institution, which raises the question of institutional cover up of the crime.
This case has received much public outcry especially in West Bengal because while the case is of rape, it also suggests systematic corruption in the educative system. The CBI is actively following other leads and there are forecasts on further people arrest in the near future.
The public has particularly responded by demanding the implementation of even harsher measures to deal with anyone in a leadership capacity who will try to hinder the process of the law.
