Janmashtami is celebrated in India with much enthusiasm and devotion and it takes several weeks before people prepare for the event, during which time the temples or homes are decorated with flowers, lights and ‘Jhankis’ which are idols or tableaux depicting some incidents in ‘Krishna’s life’. People offer new clothes, clean their homes, decorate a ‘swing on which lord Krishna was found’, prepare some special food etc. During Janmashtami, many people abstain from food and water whole day until 12 o’ clock of the night called Nirjala Vrat, which literally means fasting on the day of Janmashtami without having even a drop of water. It would be seen that this fast is considered highly auspicious, and is broken only after the last midnight celebrations.
The climax of celebration however occurs when it is almost twelve o’clock believed to be the time at which Krishna was born. Temples are filled with the ringing of bells, conches, and keerthan’s “Hara Krishna” or “Jai Shri Krishna”. The tiny form of Krishna is swaddled and put in a cradle and the atmosphere is filled with bhajans and lullabies filling the air with the sentiment of joy and devotion. In this part, there are lamp lightings called “aarti”, and the god is washed with milk, honey and water, or literally the “Abhishekam”.
The enthusiasm of Dahi Handi forms one of the most awaited festivals of Janmashtami and is celebrated with much pomp especially in Maharashtra and Gujarat. Some get carried away and put their lives on the line and form human pyramids for young boys, popularly known as Govindas, to break a pot containing curd that is hanged at a considerable height. This event is observed not only as favourable for Krishna in terms of his pranks, but it also serves as one of the scenarios that put into test the members’ strength, coordination and team work. Dahi Handi has become something of a sport in which competitors train for months before taking part in big events which attract thousands of spectators or are even eligible for cash rewards.
The Said festival is also accompanied by fasting as well as other rituals, cultural troupes and devotional processes. On most occasions, temples and community centers stage plays and dramas known as ‘Krishna Leela’, which re-enact the events in the Lord’s life such as his mischievous childhood, his dalliance with Radha and his part in the Mahabharata war. These performances are in the form of, singing, dancing, and acting and they portray Krishna as an individual and as a teacher. A more important activity in the celebration of Janmashtami is Raslila, a dance drama that depicts the love stories of Lord Krishna and the gopiyas of Vrindavan. Similarly this dance is not just a program but the expression of rituals in front of God – the eternal love between the divine and the devotees.
There are varied among each state in India and people of different district celebrate this Janmashtami festival. Hence, Mathura and Vrindavan which are believed to be the birth place and the home respectively of the God Krishna are described as the most joyous. Lakhs of pilgrims visit these sacred places; they stand immersed in prayers throughout the day, singing bhajans, doing pujas. In South India especially in Andhra pradesh and Tamil nadu people decorate their houses with coloured grains of rice on the floor and make footprints as if little Krishna has moved on that area. Temples are decorated in North India and in large banquets called “Bhog” are prepared; a variety of sweets including “Makhan Misri,” “Peda,” and “Laddu,” which are considered to be Krishna’s favorites.
Janmashtami 2024 is not merely a religious festival which denotes the birth of a deity to humanity, but also a colorful wheel of faith, culture and bonding. It is a day when all human beings irrespective of their status and standings in the society rejoice the light and wisdom that is synonymous with Lord Krishna.
