NEW DELHI: One of the reasons for moving away from Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has spoken about his decision on moving away from Prithvi Shaw, pointing out that his inconsistency and failure to live up to expectations continued for some time.
At the very outset of Indian cricket, Prithvi Shaw who made a grand entry into the Indian team and the Indian Premiere League was truly a wonder kid. Shaw had first played for the Indian side in 2018 at the age of 18 making his mark with a ton.
He made his ODI debut in July 2020 and TI20I debut in January 2021. However, Shaw failed to sustain the form he showed in his debut Test series, and he has not played any international match for India since July last year.
During IPL 2024, Shaw into the playing eleven of Delhi Capitals most of the times as he had a poor run the previous season. Ponting has recently given his opinion on issues surrounding Shaw, among others.
“I don’t like making a lot about players individually but Prithvi shouldn’t be a one-off. He should be a player, one who is picked in every team, possibly the first pick in most teams given his skills,” said Ponting referring to Shaw’s India debut as a teenager where the youngster made a hundred on his Test debut.
“And as you say, halfway through this year, we couldn’t find a slot for him in our DC Team So that is disappointing for me as a coach not be able to make certain players better and get the best out of them.” But he was also quick to note that I can only give so much and there are times when one needs to try so many times he concluded.
Ponting opined that he had several meetings with Shaw with intentions of getting the best out of him as a player. However, he understood the measure of possibilities a coach offers adding that, ‘But as a coach you feel like you’re not making players into better players and are not doing what is required for the team, you have to look for other players that can do the job for you.’ Likewise, with the latter, I had to sit him down many times, have so many words with him in an effort to help him fine-tune into a better .
These are his remarks: “I mean, he’s still a young man, and also he is still a young player; he has all the ingredients of a good player; he is a very talented young man, and hopefully one day, it will actually come to his mind really how best he can be a great cricketer,” said the former Australia captain.
Talking about Shaw, there were some discussions lately regarding his fate with the Delhi Capitals as the team starts preparing for the IPL 2025 season. For howshaw will be retained by the team it will only be seen because there is lot of strategic planning done for the mega auction which is going to held in the near future.
In the recently held series against New Zealand, Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the Delhi Capitals had a badGesture expressing his dissatisfaction at Prithvi Shaw’s performance. Shaw has been a flop buying in the IPL, especially during the TATA IPL 2023, where he managed 47 runs in six matches. Ponting noted that Shaw had not been living up to expectations and mentioned a curious aspect of Shaw’s approach: Apparently the informality of the apology and the fact that he would avoid practice when out of form, bewildered Ponting. Despite the fact that Shaw seemed to possess the ability to win a match single-handedly, his inefficiency in this aspect saw him being benched in some of the matches.
